About Ylang Ylang: Ylang Ylang (pronounced as Ee-lang Ee-lang) is a fast growing tree which is best known for its aromatic properties. The growth of this tree is so fast that on an average it grows around 15 feet in a single year. A fully grown up Yalng Ylang tree attains height of around 40 feet. Leaves of this tree are evergreen and can grow up to 8 inches long. The flowers are greenish yellow in colour and their petals form a shape similar to that of a star. Ylang Ylang tree can be cultivated in temperate climatic conditions, preferably where soil is acidic in nature. These trees are native to Indonesia and Philippines.
History of Ylang Ylang: The sweet aroma of Ylang Ylang has always attracted humans towards it. Initially it was used as an ornament and as a perfume. Bori Bori tribe from the Tahiti regions have been using this flower for centuries now. They not only decorate themselves by use of the flowers of this tree but also use it as a hair conditioner and for overall good health. Rubbing of Ylang Ylang on the body was considered effective deterrent for malaria causing mosquitoes. Traditionally in Middle East Muslim women use to burn this oil to scent their Harems. It was only in the 19th century this began to be used extensively in modern European Perfumery industry.
Properties of Ylang Ylang Oil: During the fall season the flowers of Ylang Ylang are carefully handpicked and then steamed distilled to extract its essential oil. The oil is pale yellow in colour and has a sweet floral aroma. The major chemical constituents of this essential oil include: geranyl acetate, linalool, benzyl acetate, methyl benzoate, benzyl benzoate, sesquiterpenes, caryophyllene, para cresyl methyl ether.
