About Frankincense: Frankincense which is also known as Olibanum is resin obtained from genus Boswellia. The major use of this resin is in perfumes and incense. Boswellia tree barks are slashed and resin allowed to seep out and get hardened. There are many different varieties of Boswellia tree which give lightly different kind of this resin, even in the same variety change of soil and climate could cause the difference in the output. The trees which are 8 to 10 years in age can only provide this resin.
History of Frankincense: Frankincense is perhaps one of the oldest traded essential oil and has historical records which indicate it being traded in Arabian Peninsula and North African region some 5000 years ago. Walls of ancient Egyptian temples also depict sacks of Frankincense. Fragrance and aroma of Frankincense is also associated with many religious rituals. Roman Catholic Church and temples of Jerusalem are known to use frankincense since ancient times. This resin was re-introduced to Europe by Frankish Crusaders and began to be called as Frankincense. Arabic name of the same product is Olibanum which is derived from ‘al-luban’, meaning ‘process of milking’.
Properties of Frankincense Oil: Frankincense Oil is obtained by steam distillation of oleo gum resin of Boswellia tree. The oil yield is estimated to be around 3 to 10%. The major chemical constituents of this essential oil include: alpha pinene, actanol, linalool, octyl acetate, bornyl acetate, incensole, incensyl acetate, etc.
