Botanical Name of Jojoba: Simmondsia chinensis
Synonyms: goat nut, deer nut, pignut, wild hazel, quinine nut, coffeeberry, and gray box bush
About Jojoba: Jojoba is an herb which is native to the Arizona region in North and Central America. Jojoba today is mostly cultivated for commercial reasons, prime reason being requirement of jojoba oil. Jojoba grows about 1 to 2 meters in height and has oval shaped leaves which range between 2 to 4 centimetres in length. It also bears small greenish yellow flowers. The seeds of jojoba are oval shaped and dark brown in colour. On an average a bush of jojoba may contain about 1 kgs of pollens which yield 54% of oil. The life span of this herb is around 100 to 200 years.
History of Jojoba: Since the dawn of history Jojoba is known to dwell in the desert regions of central and North America. The first written evidence of Jojoba was found in a dairy of American, Father Junipero Sierra, in the early 18th century where he mentioned it to be used by Native Americans for treating their cuts and wounds. In the early 20th century American scientists discovered that Jojoba was the only other natural source of liquid wax esters, other than whale sperms. Few years later hunting of whales was banned as it become endangered species and Jojoba is today left as the only natural source of liquid wax ester.
Properties of Jojoba Oil: This essential oil extracted from the seeds of ‘simmondsia chinesis’ and consist of the following chemical compounds: Palmitic acid, Palmitoleic acid, Stearic acid, Oleic acid, Linoleic acid, Linolenic acid, Archidic, Eicosenoic, Behenic, Erucic, Lignoceric, etc.
