About Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus tree belongs to the myrtle family which have been part and parcel of Australian flora since ages. There are more than 700 species of Eucalyptus known to us today. Eucalyptus tree always has been of interest to many. It provides good source of wood, essential oil and also acts as a natural insecticide. There are four common varieties of Eucalyptus based on their height, in descending order of their height these varieties include: Forest Tree, Woodland Tree, Mallees and Mallet. The tallest Eucalyptus tree can range up to 200 feet in height while the smallest can be of 33 feet.
History of Eucalyptus: The used of Eucalyptus oil has been common in Australia since very long as this is native to this region. The earliest form of eucalyptus oil is known to be extracted from Eucalyptus piperita in the year 1788 to treat convicts and marines. The commercial production and use of Eucalyptus Oil was started in Victoria, Australia in the year 1852. By this time oil was being extracted from a variety known as Eucalyptus radiata. By the year 1870 oil from Eucalyptus globules became popular and it still maintains it popularity world over though non Australia origin oil dominates commercial supply currently. Today China produces around 75% of world’s total production of this essential oil.
Properties of Eucalyptus Oil: This oil is steamed distilled from the leaf of Eucalyptus tree. The major chemical constituents of Eucalyptus essential oil include: alpha pinene, beta pinene, alpha phellandrene, i,8-cineole, limonene, terpinen-4-ol, aromadendrene, apiglobulol, peperitone, etc.
