About Orange: Sweet Orange is well known to all and is perhaps the widely grown evergreen tree in the world. The average height of this tree is around 10 meters and has 4 to 10 cm long ovate shaped leaves. Popularly known by the name of its fruit, Oranges are a type of berry with lots of pulp and juice within them. There are to be a clear distinction made between sweet and the bitter orange. Bitter oranges or citrus aurantium are not to be confused with sweet oranges as the bitter variety is not to be used to extract essential oil from them.
History of Orange: This most common fruit of the modern time is known to be a native of South East Asian region. There are historical evidences which point out that oranges were commercially cultivated way back around 2500 BC. The name of this fruit is also derived from ancient Language of the region known as ‘Sanskrit’. The European variety of this fruit is known to be cultivated in southern Europe in 11th century and is called ‘Persian Orange’. Persian Oranges are bitter in taste and rarely eaten as fruits. By 1450 Italian traders are known to have brought these oranges to the Mediterranean region along with the Portuguese. By Middle of 17th century oranges became popular all over the world and it has been like that ever since.
Properties of Orange Oil: Orange essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel of sweet oranges. Yield of this oil is in range of 0.3% to 0.5%. The major chemical constituents of this essential oil include; limonene, alpha pinene, linalool, citronellal, neral, sabinene, geranial, beta pinene, octanal, decanal, etc.
