Botanical Name of Walnut:  Juglans regia

Synonyms:  Persian walnut, English walnut, Common walnut 

About Walnut: Juglans regia are large trees which attain height of up to 35 meters and have trunks which range up to 2 meter in diameter. The trunks are usually short and the crown is large compared to the height of its trunk. It’s leaves are 25 to 40 cm long and the tree bears both male and female flowers. The female flowers grow into fruit during autumn season; these green fruits are large with thin eatable shell. These trees are usually found at altitudes ranging from 1000 meters to 2000 meters above sea level.

History of Walnut: The native land for walnut trees ranges from central Aisa and moves towards east to Himalayas in the east. The regions where walnuts are grown include Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan and western China. In fourth century BC, Alexander had introduced this fruit as “Persian Nut” in Macedonia and Greece. Later this tree was spread to southern Europe and northern Africa by Romans. English colonists introduced this fruit to America in the 17th century. These nuts are traditionally eaten fresh and now in commercial demand for its oil.  

Properties of Walnut Oil: The kernel of the walnuts is dried and then cold pressed to extract walnut essential oil from it. Chemical constituents of this oil include: Palmitic acid, Palmitoleic acid, Stearic acid, Oleic acid, Linoleic Acid, alpha Linoliec Acid, Archidic acid, Eicosenoic acid, Vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C, D, E, K, Iron, magnesium, manganese, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, etc.
