About Palmarosa: Cymbopogon martini which is popularly known as Palmarosa is a kind of grass very similar to lemongrass and belongs to ‘poaceae’ family. This plant is also known as Indian rosha or rosha grass in the Indian region. This herb is known to be grown in wild and not generally cultivated. It has slim, fragrant and long stems with flowers on the top. Indian, China and other countries in South east Asian region are known to be the prime supplier of this herb as it naturally here.
History of Palmarosa: Traditionally Palmarosa has been used for its fragrance. People in the Indo China region soon realised its therapeutic qualities and started using it as a traditional medicine. It was also used as an insect repellent historically and put around grain storage or warehouses. Initially people confused Palmarosa with Lemongrass but soon they realized the difference between the two. The word ‘rosa’ in the name of this herb is due to the fact the smell of this grass is somewhat similar to that of roses and hence also used in many cosmetics for its fragrance. This herb is harvested usually before flowers appear on them left to be dried before oil could be extracted from it.
Properties of Palmarosa Oil: Palmarosa essential oil is obtained from dried grass of cymbopogon martini and can yield up to 1.5% of essential oil. The major chemical constituents of this oil include: myrcene, geraniol (this is a prime source of this compound), linalool, geranyl acetate, dipentene, limonene, etc.
