About Nutmeg: Nutmeg tree is an evergreen tree which grows up to 65 feet tall and is native to an Indonesian Island region. Nutmeg and mace are the two things obtained from this tree which make it commercially important. Nutmeg is basically seed of this tree and is egg shaped. Each seed is about 30mm long and 18mm wide and weighs anything between 5 to10 grams. A nutmeg plant would bear flowers only between 6th to 8th years. Nutmeg is demand because of its use in culinary application and therapeutic properties.
History of Nutmeg: There have been historical evidences which highlight the use of nutmeg during medieval times as a flavouring, medicinal and preservative agent. Monks used to sprinkle nutmeg on their puddings before eating them. It was also believed that nutmeg had properties which could fight plague and hence it was a very popular commodity with high demand. Internal trading of nutmeg was dominated by Muslims of the Middle East region and they were successful in concealing the origins of this fruit so that no Europeans could reach its source. However by 17th century trade of nutmeg was dominated by Dutch. A major war was also fought between the English and the Dutch over the control of nutmeg producing region which was won by Dutch.
Properties of Nutmeg Oil: Nutmeg essential oil is obtained from steam distillation of dried nutmeg seeds. The major chemical constituents of this oil include: alpha pinene, beta pinene, sabinene, linalool, safrole, methyl eugenol, limonene, camphene, myrcene, alpha phyllandrene, alpha terpinene, etc.
