Botanical Name of Hyssop:   Hyssopus officinalis

About Hyssop: Hyssop or Hyssopus is an aromatic plant which is native to central Asia and Mediterranean. It has erect stem which is covered with fine hair like tips and narrow oblong leaves. The upper part of the plant bears nice blue coloured small flowers which blossom during summers. Due to its usage in Perfumery Industry and therapeutic properties Hyssopus Officinalis is widely cultivated outside its native region. Hyssop belongs to the mint family but should not be misunderstood with anise hyssop which is a very different plant and no way related to the Hyssop.   

History of Hyssop: This attractive plant has been native to the Mediterranean region and its name is derived from the Hebrew word ‘ezob’ meaning ‘holy herb’. Hyssop is also mentioned in the Old Testament where it was used for purification. Various parts of this plant include its hairy stem, lacy leaves and blue flowers were used in ancient time to treat many ailments and also have been referred to in Bible for its ability to counter epidemics like plague, leprosy and chest problems.

Properties of Hyssop Oil: Essential oil from Hyssop is extracted through steam distillation of its leaves and flowering tops. The major chemical constituents of Hyssop essential oil include: alpha pinene, beta pinene, camphene, limonene, sabinene, pinocamphone, myrcene, isopinocamphene, y-terpineol, thujone, 1,8 cineole, etc.
