About Grapefruit: Grapefruit tree is a sub tropical evergreen tree which grows up to 5 to 6 meters tall. It has green long leaves and bears four petal white coloured flowers which are roughly 5 cms in size. For quite long this tree was only known for its ornamental properties and it was only in 19th century it became popular for various other benefits derived out of its fruit. Grapefruit has a diameter of 10 to 15 cms and has yellow skin with juicy fruit inside similar to that of an orange or a lime and is very rich in Vitamin C.
History of Grapefruit: Grapefruit is considered a hybrid fruit which is believed to have originated when an Indonesian pomelo was brought and planted in Jamaica by a person called “captain shaddock”. Grape fruit became so popular in Caribbean that it is called one of the seven wonders of Jamaica. By the beginning of 19th century this fruit was called ‘Shattuck’ or ‘shaddock’. One day when someone saw the clutter of fruits hanging on the tree looking similar to grapes, it was named as grape fruit.
It was not long before the fruit moved to America and started being cultivated there. Today United States of America is the world’s leading producer of grapefruit and is followed by China, South Africa, Mexico, Syria, Israel, Turkey, India, Argentina and Cuba. The most popular varieties of grapefruit cultivated today are identified by their colour and they include: red, white and pink.
Properties of Grapefruit Oil: The Grapefruit essential oil is obtained from its peel. The fresh peel of grapefruit is cold compressed to get this oil and its yield is around 0.5 to maximum 1 percent. The major chemical constituents of grapefruit essential oil include: alpha pinene, myrcene, limonene, sabinene, citronellal, linalool, decyl acetate, neryl acetate, etc.
