Botanical Name of Galbanum:  Ferula galbaniflua 

Synonyms: Ferula gummosa, Ferula rubricaulis 

About Galbanum: Galbanum is referred to an aromatic gum resin which is primarily derived from plant ‘ferula galbaniflua’. This plant is known to be grown in the mountain ranges of Northern Iran. It has smooth stem, shiny leaflets and small flowers. The juice or the resin in this plant is can be obtained from the insertions made in the root. .This resin when hardened is collected and steam distilled to extract Galbanum essential Oil from it.

History of Galbanum: Latest historical evidence shows that Egyptians used Galbanum as a major component in many different perfumes. This plant and its resin were greatly in demand because of its fragrance and therapeutic properties. Certain compounds found in Galbanum oil have fixative properties which means its smell would last longer than other natural perfumes without fixatives. Galbanum was also used in the holy essence and it also finds its mention in the Holy Bible. This special essence was only allowed to be made and used to worship lord or in certain religious ceremonies. Any other use of this essence was forbidden.

Properties of Galbanum Oil: Galbanum essential oil is of light brown, yellowish brown or greenish yellow in colour and has a peculiar musky smell. It is heavier than water and has a specific gravity of 1.212. The major chemical constituents of galbanum essential oil include: terpenes, sulphur, gum, alpha pinene, beta pinene, limonene, cadinine, ocimene, etc.
