About Elemi: Elemi is a popular species of tropical tree which is from Philippines and best known for its resin. This tree is which is also called “pilli” in the local Filipino language, can grow up to 30 meters in height. The gum or the resin (available when the tree sprout leaves) of this tree is exported from here to rest of the world and constitute mainly of two varieties known as ‘Primera’ and ‘Secunda’. Elemi resin is majorly used in lacquers, varnishes, printing inks, perfume, cosmetics and as herbal medicine. This tree can be closely related to Frankincense and Myrrh.    

History of Elemi: There is a long history of Elemi being used for skin care and respiratory related ailments. It should also me noted that in different times periods in history the name ‘Elemi’ has been used to refer different resins. During the 17^th and 18^th century this term usually was used to refer resin obtained from trees of genus Icica in Latin America. Before 17^th century it was used to denote the resin of ‘Boswellia frereana’. The word Elemi has been derived from an Arabic Phase which means ‘As above, so below’, in reference to emotional and spiritual properties of the product.

Properties of Elemi Oil: Insertions are made in the tree trunk of Canarium lunzonicum makes way for natural gum to be collected on the surface. As this gum is steam distilled to obtain the pale yellow coloured Elemi Oil. The major chemical constituents of this oil include: terpineol, limonene, elemol, elemicine, dipentene, phellandrene, etc.
