About Basil: Basil which is more commonly known as Sweet Basil across Europe is primarily used in cooking in various cuisines. Though it is primarily produced in India it has found most of its use in Italian cuisine. Different varieties of Basil are found in different countries, major varieties of basil include; Tai Basil, Lemon Basil and holy basil.
Typically Basil herb grows till 3 feet in height and bears small white flowers. The oil is steamed distilled through its leaves and is obtained in form of greenish yellow liquid.
History of Basil Oil: History of usage of basil is some 5000 years old. Originally cultivated in tropical climates of Indian subcontinent basil has been known to be used in various different forms by the natives here. The word ‘basil’ has been originated from a Greek word ‘basilues’ which means ‘King’. It was Greek nobles which first started using Basil Oil in their baths and as massage oil. Soon after the Egyptians used Basil oil and mixed it with few other essential oils to form an aromatic fragrance which they started to offer to their God’s.
According to Hindu mythology Basil is considered sacred and continues to be offered to various God’s as it is believed to have qualities which could cleanse soul.
